Division Chief for Pediatric Anesthesia

The University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia is seeking an accomplished academic anesthesiologist to serve as Division Chief for Pediatric Anesthesia. This individual will report to the Chair of the Department of Anesthesia. The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the UI Department of Anesthesia and Stead Family Children’s Hospital missions as they pertain to the practice of pediatric anesthesiology, including clinical care, education, research, and administration.

Responsibilites for this position include:

Clinical Care:

  • Provide leadership and expertise in clinical operations management at UIHC and the SFCH
  • Employ evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes
  • Lead the division in implementation of protocol standardization, where applicable, working to eliminate barriers to quality and safety
  • Foster a culture of inclusiveness and team-centricity, help to clarify roles and responsibilities

Education:

  • In collaboration with our Vice Chair for Education, develop and advance a pediatric anesthesia curriculum for the anesthesia core residency and pediatric anesthesia fellowship
  • Serve as a role model to junior faculty in the instruction and mentoring of all trainees

Research:

  • Lead innovative scholarship in pediatric anesthesia
  • In collaboration with our Vice Chair for Research, implement plans to increase the department’s NIH funding base
  • Promote collaboration among divisional faculty and encourage multidisciplinary partnerships

Administration:

  • Under the guidance of the Chair, identify goals and develop, monitor and share metrics to track progress on goals
  • Attend regular meetings with faculty, staff, Chair, and other departmental / institutional leadership
  • Help foster the careers of division faculty; identify and support opportunities for professional development and leadership development

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.

 

Education Requirement:

  • Candidates must hold an MD, DO, or equivalent degree
  • Successful completion of an approved residency training program in Anesthesiology

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Iowa
  • Candidates must be board-certified in Anesthesiology (or non-US Board equivalent) or be in the certification process. On occasion, individuals trained outside of the United States who are certified by an equivalent national certification group may be considered.
  • Candidates must demonstrate experience working effectively in a diverse environment

Certifications:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification through the American Heart Association

Desirable Qualifications:

  • American Board of Anesthesia Pediatric Certification
  • Previous formal supervisory experience is a plus
  • Fellowship training or equivalent clinical experience in Pediatric Anesthesia
  • Experience in teaching and clinical research
