Anesthesia Externship

Anesthesia Externship Program

The Anesthesia Externship program is designed to be an enjoyable and profitable learning experience for medical students and it has been a successful and popular program for several decades. To participate in the program, an individual must be a registered Carver College of Medicine medical student in good standing. Twelve externs are chosen each year for this year-long program. Externs receive a salary, as well as other benefits including on-call money, an Anesthesia textbook, $1,000 scholarship, and a letter of recommendation for residency signed by our Chair and Co-directors.

The Externship begins the Monday after commencement in their M3 year, and continues through the Sunday prior to their graduation.  Call shifts are 6:00 PM-11:00 PM Monday through Thursday evenings, Fridays from 6:00 PM-7:00 AM, Saturday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 AM (24 hrs), and Sundays from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Holiday calls are the same as weekends. Externs work with the Chief Extern on their call schedules, and arrangements can be made to avoid conflicts with away rotations, and during interview season.

Our Purpose

  • The purpose of this program is to allow individuals to learn more about anesthesia, and at the same time, assist the operating room on-call teams with patient care. This assistance is rather open and may range from simply cleaning a room, setting up a room for an upcoming case, to actually participating in anesthesia procedures.

Interested?

Those who are interested in the Anesthesia Externship should take the two-week Clinical Anesthesia clerkship (ANES:8301) in the first 12 months of their Core year, and complete the four-week Anesthesia Senior clerkship (ANES:8401) by October of  M4 year.

  • We encourage interested students to contact us to answer any questions in detail.
