Message from the Director
The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics Pain Management Clinic diagnoses, manages, and treats patients with long-term, treatment-resistant pain using a multidisciplinary approach. We require a referral from a physician and work in collaboration with referring physicians to facilitate implementation of the plan of care.
The Pain Management Clinic at The University of Iowa serves patients with chronic pain from both cancer and non-cancer related diagnoses. Multimodal treatment protocols are instituted, utilizing both interventional and non-interventional techniques.
The goals of treatments are different for each patient. We support working with multiple health care providers and using as many treatment options as needed, such as:
- Medicines: choosing the right medicine and the right dose
- Injections: perform appropriate, advanced image-guided injection treatments
- Physical therapy: strengthen muscles, correct posture, and improve mobility
- Mental health therapies: teach coping skills, relaxation strategies, and exercises
- Refer to other specialties: acupuncture, neurology, surgery, and more
