UI Health Care Center for Procedural Skills and Simulation, in collaboration with the Offices of Consultation and Research in Medical Education and Operational Excellence, and the Departments of Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, and Nursing, presents this three-day immersive course, which will be held at a to be determined date.

Purpose

Participants in this course join a growing community of practice in health care that applies debriefing and/or simulation effectively to promote learning, teamwork, and patient safety.

Learning Objectives

The UI Team-based Simulation Design and Debriefing workshop enables the participant to:

Design, conduct, and debrief an interprofessional simulation
Explain the implications of behavior rather than knowledge as the object of learning and measurement
Model and analyze health care teamwork skills in critical situations
Deliver effective educational feedback in a manner that promotes self-reflection
Describe a "culture of inquiry" and explain its approach to patient safety and medical error

Intended Audience

Health care faculty and staff interested in development of debriefing and/or simulation skills. Students are also welcome if their advisor or program director agrees this is applicable to their program or will be used during their time at UI.

Special Note

This course is intended to be an immersive experience. We respectfully ask that you arrange to be off service and free of call responsibilities throughout the course. You must attend all three sessions of the course.

Please note: The $225 tuition covers only the material costs of the course and food (three breakfasts, three lunches and breaks). Program faculty are committed to building a rich simulation culture in our institution. Comparable instructional programs range between $1,500 and $3,000. To help the simulation initiative grow and to keep tuition low we ask that you conduct at least three simulations at the University of Iowa (at least one of which should be an interprofessional simulation). This should be done within 18 months of completing the Team-Based Simulation Design and Debriefing Program.

CME Credit Potential

TSDD has offered CME credit before and is willing to make arrangements to do so again if this is of value to our participants. There will be an additional charge. Please contact us as soon as possible, as these arrangements will take time.

Nursing CE Credit Designation

24.5 contact hours will be granted by UI Hospitals & Clinics, Department of Nursing, IBN Approved Provider #34. Participants must attend each session in its entirety to receive full credit. 

There may be slight changes on the total number of CE credits.
