The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Iowa Health Care invites recent graduates and experienced faculty to apply for faculty positions within our expanding department. Successful candidates will join our team in providing patient-focused clinical care, education at all levels, and clinical research/scholarship. Salary, academic rank, and faculty track will be based on the applicant’s qualifications, goals, and research interests. Opportunities exist for involvement in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, EMS, Ultrasound, Research, Toxicology, and Clinical Operations in addition to many other disciplines within the Department.
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is a Level 1 Trauma Center for adults and children and the state of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic medical center. We are one of the nation’s largest university-owned teaching hospitals. The Emergency Department features a 44-bed emergency department, an annual volume of 50,000 visits, and includes three trauma bays, two psychiatric emergency rooms, one room dedicated to dental, ear, nose, throat, or eye emergencies plus rooms dedicated for pediatric patients; physician double coverage always with PA/ARNP support; and 6, 8- or 12-hour shifts. Applicants must be a graduate of an approved medical school, have a medical or osteopathic degree, and be a graduate of an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency.
Applicants must be board-eligible, or board certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine at the time of hire and must be committed to providing patient-focused care as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. Applicants will need to demonstrate effective interpersonal and written communication skills and possess a strong commitment to academic medicine. Successful candidates must have demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment and be committed to ongoing performance improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives.
For an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor (clinical or tenure track), candidates must possess impeccable clinical skills, show evidence of strong organizational and leadership skills, and a demonstrated track record as an academic physician with a strong commitment to clinical excellence, medical education, and research/scholarship.
Certifications: Applicants must be board-eligible, or board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) by the time of hire.
Desirable Qualifications:
Fellowship training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, EMS, Ultrasound, Research, Toxicology, or Administration.
Prior academic experience in Emergency Medicine training programs.
Prior teaching experience in the medical sciences, post graduate level.
Prior research experience/scholarship in Emergency Medicine or the health sciences.

Successful candidates will join our team in providing patient-focused clinical care, education at all levels, and clinical research/scholarship. Salary, academic rank, and faculty track will be based on the applicant’s qualifications, goals, and scholarship interests.
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Stead Family Children’s Hospital are the state’s only comprehensive academic medical center and a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center offering complete medical and surgical specialty coverage including an inpatient child psychiatry unit. Stead Family Children’s Hospital is consistently ranked among the nation’s best in multiple pediatric specialties by U.S. News & World Report.
The Department of Emergency Medicine oversees robust clinical, educational, and research programs including an Emergency Medicine residency program, core and advanced medical student clerkship, multiple fellowship programs, and the University of Iowa AirCare. The Pediatric ED has access to 3 pediatric-equipped trauma/resuscitation rooms, 6 closed-door rooms, and 5 fast track rooms for a total of 14 operational rooms. It has an annual volume of 12,000+ pediatric patients, excellent resident physician coverage as well as APP support. Physical expansion of the pediatric ED is approved and funded and is currently in the architectural design phase.

Emergency Medicine Visiting Instructor

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Iowa Health Care is seeking to fill faculty positions at the rank of Visiting Instructor. This position allows for clinical practice while pursuing additional training in these tracks of study: Medical Education, Emergency Ultrasound, Research, and Social Medicine. Upon successful completion of this appointment, the Visiting Instructor in Emergency Medicine will earn a certification of completion of training and will have had the opportunity to earn a Master’s degree.
The Visiting Instructor will work in the capacity of a junior faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine (ED). They will have full attending responsibilities and for the purposes of billing and compliance, shall bill as faculty members. Clinical service in the ED, completion of at least one academic or research project, active participation in teaching Emergency Medicine residents and medical students, and track-specific curriculum are minimum responsibilities of the Visiting Instructor position during the specified term of appointment.
Applicants must have a medical or osteopathic degree or equivalent. Applicants must be graduates of ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency programs or Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowships and be board-eligible or board-certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or board-eligible or board-certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or the American Board of Pediatrics.
