Emergency Medicine Faculty Physician

The Department of Emergency Medicine at University of Iowa Health Care invites recent graduate and experienced physicians to apply for academic-based or community-based faculty positions.

The primary practice site (academic-based vs. community-based) will be determined by multiple factors to include department and applicant considerations, applicant’s qualifications and experience and needs of the overall health care system.

Salary, academic rank at the Assistant, Associate, or full Professor level, and faculty track are commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications, experience, career goals, and research interests.

Opportunities exist for involvement in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, EMS, Ultrasound, Research, Toxicology, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Critical Care, Sports Medicine, Global Medicine, Social Medicine, plus many more.

The University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center University Campus is a Level 1 Trauma Center for adults and children and the state of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic medical center. We host a core medical student clerkship, emergency medicine residency program for physicians and PAs, and multiple fellowship programs.

The department also oversees multiple community emergency departments with plans to expand sites as the health system grows.

Education Requirement:

 Applicants must have MD or DO degree (or equivalent) and be a graduate of an ACGME-accredited training program.

Required Qualifications:

For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or full Professor, candidates must possess impeccable clinical skills, show evidence of strong organizational and leadership skills, and a demonstrated track record as a physician with a strong commitment to clinical excellence, medical education, and research/scholarship.
Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Iowa.

Certifications:

Applicants must be board eligible, or board certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or in Pediatric Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or American Board of Pediatrics at time of hire.  

Desirable Qualifications:

Formal fellowship training to include Pediatric Emergency Medicine, EMS, Ultrasound, Research, Toxicology, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Critical Care, Sports Medicine, Global Medicine, and Social Medicine plus other pertinent programs.

  • Prior experience in academic Emergency Medicine. 
  • Prior teaching experience in the medical sciences, post graduate level.
  • Prior research experience/scholarship in Emergency Medicine or the health sciences.
  • Demonstrated experience providing patient focused care as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Effective interpersonal and written communication skills and a strong commitment to academic medicine.
  • Desirable attributes include a record of innovative and effective administrative and fiscal leadership, a record of excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated experience promoting an inclusive workforce, and positive interactions with students, staff and faculty.

Emergency Medicine Visiting Instructor

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Iowa Health Care is seeking to fill faculty positions at the rank of Visiting Instructor. This position allows for clinical practice while pursuing additional training in these tracks of study: Medical Education, Emergency Ultrasound, Research, and Social Medicine.  Upon successful completion of this appointment, the Visiting Instructor in Emergency Medicine will earn a certification of completion of training and will have had the opportunity to earn a Master’s degree.

The Visiting Instructor will work in the capacity of a junior faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine (ED).  They will have full attending responsibilities and for the purposes of billing and compliance, shall bill as faculty members.  Clinical service in the ED, completion of at least one academic or research project, active participation in teaching Emergency Medicine residents and medical students, and track-specific curriculum are minimum responsibilities of the Visiting Instructor position during the specified term of appointment.

Applicants must have a medical or osteopathic degree or equivalent.  Applicants must be graduates of ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency programs or Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowships and be board-eligible or board-certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or board-eligible or board-certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or the American Board of Pediatrics.
