Daniel McCabe, MD

Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine

Introduction

Dan McCabe, MD is a Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Iowa where he is the Director of the Division of Medical Toxicology at UIHC. In addition, he is the Medical Director of the Iowa Poison Control Center. With these dual roles, he is actively engaged in numerous aspects of improving the care for poisoned patients throughout the state. Dr. McCabe is board certified in three specialties: Emergency Medicine, Medical Toxicology, and Addiction Medicine.

His area of clinical expertise is focused on improving the care of poisoned patients including: people suffering from adverse drug reactions, unintentional or intentional overdoses, exposures to chemical products or environmental hazards or heavy metals, envenomation, clinical states of intoxication and withdrawal, and antidotal therapies. Through collaboration with providers and institutions throughout the state, he is focused on advancing the quality of care for all poisoned patients throughout Iowa.

Additionally, Dr. McCabe is implementing pharmacogenomic testing to improve patient care with goals to reduce adverse drug reactions and to improve efficacy of medication regimens.

Dr. McCabe is an active researcher with projects related to various toxicology topics, resource utilization, public health, and areas of clinical dependence. He lectures at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in addition to other speaking engagements locally and nationally.

  • Exploring strategies to safely reduce resource utilization in the management of poisoned patients

  • Clinical outcomes associated with pharmacogenomic testing in the setting of polypharmacy or medication-resistant psychiatric illness
