Alward recognized for volunteering and impact across the globe

Glaucoma specialist Dr. Wallace L.M. Alward is passionate about teaching and has been a long-time volunteer with Orbis, a global organization dedicated to eliminating avoidable blindness in the developing world.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Alward has volunteered to teach fellow eye teams on at least six Flying Eye Hospital programs. He has traveled to China, Kenya, the Philippines, and most recently Vietnam where he works with other volunteer ophthalmologists to teach diagnostic and surgical skills to ophthalmologists-in-training. His efforts have equipped others to prevent blindness and restore sight worldwide.

In 2020, Orbis programming shifted to online, virtual training due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Alward delivered more virtual training sessions than any other Orbis volunteer faculty and played a leading role in the first ever virtual Flying Eye Hospital Projects in Zambia and Mongolia. The Mongolia project featured the highest enrollment of all 2020 courses and highest attendance in live sessions.  For all his efforts and valuable contributions, Alward was recognized by Orbis as one of their “Heroes of Orbis”.
