Laser Vision Correction and Refractive Surgery Clinic

University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics offers a variety of refractive surgery options. Our doctors are highly-trained specialists in the field of corneal and refractive surgery. We offer the newest, safest, and effective options for laser vision correction surgery.

Refractive surgery is one of the most common elective procedures done in the United States. The procedure involves changing the shape of the cornea – the clear front “window” of the eye – to improve how many people see.

We offer consultative appointments and free seminars to discuss different refractive surgery options.

Vision specialists at UI Hospitals and Clinics offer a variety of laser-based treatments that can change the shape of your cornea, improving how you see.

Types of Refractive and Laser Surgery Options

PRK (Photo-Refractive Keratectomy)

is used to treat low to moderate levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Surgeons correct your vision by removing a thin layer of tissue from the surface of the cornea and reshaping the cornea.

LASIK (Laser In-situ Keratomileusis)

corrects your vision by reshaping the corneal tissue beneath the surface of the cornea. LASIK reshapes the cornea beneath the surface, rather than on the surface like PRK. LASIK is used to treat higher ranges of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

LASEK (Laser Sub-epithelial Keratomileusus)

combines elements of PRK and LASIK.

INTACS (corneal ring segments)

is an alternative treatment to laser vision correction. Segments are placed in the periphery of the cornea, allowing it to flatten in the center. INTACS is used to treat low levels of nearsightedness.

Custom LASIK

creates a unique laser treatment for each patient.

Consultations and procedure coordination is arranged by Lisa Leavy, Refractive Surgery Coordinator.
