Elaine Binkley, MD
Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences
Current Positions
- Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences
Education
- Resident in Ophthalmology, The Ohio State University, Wexner Medical Center, Columbus, OH
- Fellow in Vitreoretinal Surgery, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, IA
- Fellow in Retina Clinical and Molecular Research, University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City, IA
- Visiting Scholar in Ocular Oncology, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH
Research Interests
- Prognostication in posterior uveal melanoma
- Optimization of brachytherapy treatment for posterior uveal melanoma
- Pathophysiology and treatment of radiation retinopathy
- Clinical and molecular pathophysiology of von Hippel-Lindau disease
- Ocular side effects of systemic chemotherapeutic agents
- Molecular pathophysiology of ocular disease in neurofibromatosis type 1
- I study more rare intra-ocular tumors with a special interest in von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease and neurofibromatosis. I study the mechanisms behind phenotypic variability in VHL disease and potential molecular treatment approaches and was a co-primary investigator on a R21 grant funded project studying this topic. I am the co-primary investigator on a project grant funded by the Gilbert Family Foundation studying the molecular pathophysiology of neurofibromatosis and novel treatment approaches. I also participate in studies of primary vitreoretinal lymphoma, choroidal metastasis, and retinoblastoma
- I collaborate with the Holden cancer center as part of clinical trials of novel targeted therapies for systemic malignancies and study the mechanisms behind ocular side effects of systemic chemotherapeutic medications
