Program Description

UIHC Family Medicine Advanced Practice Provider Residents

Program Goal: Our APP residents will expand their medical knowledge, master the core competencies and develop the skills needed to provide comprehensive care in an outpatient clinic setting to individuals and families of all ages and walks of life.   

Program Description and Objectives: The APP resident will receive in-depth training in the following areas:

General Family Medicine Clinic: Working alongside Family Medicine faculty and residents in a well-established primary care clinic, our APP resident will expand their diagnostic skills while evaluating and treating challenging patients in the general family medicine clinic.

Procedure Clinic: The APP resident will work one-on-one with faculty physicians learning many common procedures including skin biopsy, toenail removal, cyst excision, skin tag removal, endometrial biopsy, IUD insertion/removal and Nexplanon insertion/removal.

Psychiatry Rotation: APP residents will spend 10 days (1 day per week) alongside psychiatry faculty and residents learning how to perform and interpret a comprehensive psychiatric assessment and gaining skills in medication management.

Geriatrics: As a member of a multi-disciplinary team APP residents will evaluate community living elderly patients with the goal of enhancing health and function.

Musculoskeletal Clinic: APP residents will expand musculoskeletal history and physical exam skills and learn common joint injections with the Sports Medicine/Family Medicine faculty.

Inpatient Service: Managing patients who become acutely ill and require hospitalization, APP residents will work with the Family Medicine inpatient team managing hospitalized patients at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. During this rotation, APP residents will develop clinical judgement about when patients require hospitalization.

Instructional practices: The APP residents will:

  • Identify gaps in their knowledge or experiences and shape a plan for filling these gaps through formal experiences and self-directed learning.

  • Integrate cost-effective medical decision making to complement patient care goals.

  • Utilize strategies to improve clinical efficiency and patient safety by using the Electronic Medical Record.
