Visiting Students

The Department of Family Medicine offers 4th-year four-week electives in University of Iowa Family Medicine (FAM:8402) and Family Medicine-Psychiatry (FAM:8422) to visiting medical students enrolled in a LCME accredited medical school during the months of July through October. These four-week rotations are approved and arranged by the department.  At this time, the only osteopathic medical school that we can accept applications from is Des Moines University.

Students interested should submit the following in a PDF to the Medical Student Education Coordinator at fm-clerkship@uiowa.edu

  4. E-mail
  5. Phone
  6. Name of Medical School
  7. Name of Undergraduate School/Degree
  8. Current CV
  9. Medical School Transcripts
  10. USMLE 1 Score
  11. Letter of Interest*

*The letter of interest should be 250 words or less and includes why you are interested in the specific Family Medicine elective.

All applications will be reviewed by the department on March 15th and tentative approval will be sent to the student prior to the April 1st Carver College of Medicine application opening date. If application materials are sent after March 15th to the Department of Family Medicine, materials will be reviewed and may be accommodated if rotations are available.

Following notification of tentative approval from the Department of Family Medicine, the applicant will need to complete the application process outlined here. Upon completion of the criteria and department approval, you will be allowed to formally apply and be approved as a visiting student through the Carver College of Medicine. (Until this process is complete, the elective as approved first by the department is not official). Once you are accepted through the college, you will be sent a list of housing available near the hospital. Reasonably priced, four-week housing blocks can often be found with current medical students or residents. We do recommend you have access to personal transportation while on our Family Medicine-Psychaitry 4-week rotation as this elective requires students to go to various clinical sites throughout the Iowa City area.

We welcome students to enroll in a wide variety of advanced courses, including those which meet the sub-internship requirement and those which may be used to fulfill electives. List of current courses and information.

All enrollment for Family Medicine advanced courses must be done through the Office of Student Affairs and Curriculum and according to their procedures. Some courses, as noted, require permission to register.
