Statistical Support Request

Biostatistics support for grant applications, project development, and analysis is supported and encouraged by the Department of Family Medicine. We expect clinical grant applications to include biostatistical support in the budget if applicable. Initial consultation will be scheduled to occur within 1‐2 weeks after receipt of this request. Department of Family Medicine Biostatistics Support

Goals:

To provide statistical support to scholarship and research projects to improve data analysis of clinical research and promote research outcomes and growth, including expansion of the DFM research enterprise.

Who is eligible?

Department of Family Medicine primary faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students working with DFM faculty.

What is thecost?

  • Funded projects will bill the work to the project’s MFK
  • If you are meeting to discuss the statistics in a project under development and funding will be requested in the future, there is no charge (assuming you include statistics support in your grant budget)
  • If there is no funding and the project is not extremely complex the department will support the work. The statistician will bill for time spent, and if any individual’s needs are excessive, alternative funding options will be discussed on a case-by-case basis

When should someone request biostatistics consultation?

  • Prior to any grant submission that includes statistical analysis
  • Prior to initiating a project to ensure that the analysis plan is clear, and the data collected are appropriate
  • Prior to full IRB submission, so that an appropriate statistical plan can be provided
  • When you have a data set that needs analyzing---even if you have done the first pass of analysis, it is often helpful to review data and analysis approach with an expert prior to submission for publication
  • When you are considering a project and need help determining feasibility

How do I access this service?

  • Complete the request form found in the folder below
  • The request will be reviewed by the department liaison for appropriateness
  • If there are questions or recommended changes, the liaison will reach out to you to discuss
  • If the request is approved, it will be forwarded to biostatistics

What is the turnaround time on request for consultation?

  • It is expected that the initial consultation will take place within 2 weeks of submission of the request. The actual analysis will take longer, with time dependent on complexity of the project.

What is expected in exchange?

  • Please either include the statistician as a co-author or acknowledge them for consultation depending on the contribution, in any manuscripts or presentations
  • Include funding for biostatistics support in grant submissions.
