Immunology

The Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Immunology offers classroom and research training leading to a Ph.D. degree which will prepare the student for a career in academic research, industry, or teaching. The learning experience is enhanced by an outstanding seminar series and journal clubs at which the most current immunology research is discussed.

Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology consists of 34 faculty members with strengths in bacterial genetics and physiology, animal virology, pathogenic bacteriology and virology, and immunology. Areas of research include Bioinformatics, Cellular Microbiology, Molecular Virology and Immunology, Bacterial Biochemistry and Physiology, Bioremediation, Bacterial and Viral pathogenesis, and Molecular Parasitology. By working in the laboratory of their Ph.D. advisor, students learn to define and experimentally investigate scientific questions and to conduct original research in preparation for positions in academia, government and industry.

Molecular Medicine

The Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Molecular Medicine at The University of Iowa provides broad training in molecular & cellular biology. The university-wide nature of this program permits training and research opportunities in the laboratories of the faculty members who participate in the program.

Medical Scientist Training Program

The Iowa Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) provides training for both the MD and PhD degrees in an environment that integrates graduate research training with clinical studies. The Iowa MSTP has a long-standing reputation for excellence in its 35 years of NIH funded training of physician scientists. The MSTP promotes an educational atmosphere which highlights the interconnections between science and medicine. The goal is to produce physician scientists whose talents and insights will make major impacts on health care delivery in the 21st century.

Pathology

The Department of Pathology Graduate Program prepares post-baccalaureate science majors for a range of biomedical careers. Graduate-level coursework provides graduate students with a foundation in cellular and molecular biology, as well as specialized knowledge in pathobiology. A laboratory intensive thesis project equips trainees with cutting edge research skills.
