Fundic Polyps in Patient on Proton Pump Inhibitors

last modified on: Tue, 09/12/2023 - 11:57

return to: Esophagoscopy with narrow band imaging (NBI) for Reflux Esophagitis

Esophagoscopy June 2011 done at time of treatment for subglottic stenosis identified multiple gastric polyps at the time of esophagoscopy. Biopsy of one identified: "hyperplastic polyp with inflamation and reactive epithelial changes".  Subsequent evaluation by gastroenterology with multiple biopsies showed "fundic gland polyps" and biopsy of the antrum mucosa showing "gastric body type mucosa with no diagnostic abnormality".

Age and in particular long-term (>12 months) use of PPIs are risk factors for the development of fundic gland polyps.
