POMS: Perinatal Opportunity for Medical Students

The POMS program is an organization at the Carver College of Medicine which provides M1 and M2 students with the opportunity to experience the prenatal journey from the patient’s perspective. Each student interested in joining the program will be assigned to a “Mom”, which is a patient receiving prenatal care at one of the UIHC affiliated locations once they have reached 20 weeks’ gestation. The locations currently include: UIHC, IRL, and North Dodge. The student will then be able to attend prenatal visits with the individual/family and possibly observe the delivery. While this program provides great observing experiences for the student, it also provides expecting mothers and their families with additional support, kindness, and knowledge through medical student participation. By joining this program, you can expect to become a part of this individual/family’s life and participate in some of their most vulnerable and exciting moments.
