Dr. Gail Bishop is named incoming editor-in-chief of The Journal of Immunology

Gail Bishop, PhD imageThe American Association of Immunologists (AAI) has appointed Gail A. Bishop, PhD, DFAAI, as the incoming editor-in-chief of The Journal of Immunology (The JI). Dr. Bishop is a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Her five-year term as editor-in-chief will begin on January 1, 2024 and end on December 31, 2028.

Dr. Bishop received her PhD in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her doctoral thesis focused on the immune response to Herpes Simplex virus. She completed postdoctoral work at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she studied B lymphocyte activation and the structure-function relationship of B cell signal receptors.

Throughout her career, Dr. Bishop has held various academic positions at the University of Iowa, including professor of microbiology, endowed College of Medicine Distinguished Professor of Microbiology, and Holden Chair of Cancer Biology. She has also served as the director of the PhD - granting Immunology Graduate Program and the Center for Immunology and Immune-Based Diseases at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Bishop has a long history of service to AAI. She has served as both an associate and section editor of The JI. She has been a member of the AAI Council from 2007 to 2014, holding positions such as AAI Councilor, AAI vice president, AAI president, and AAI past president. She has also represented AAI on the Council of the International Union of Immunology Societies. Dr. Bishop has also served on various grant review panels and received honors and fellowships from scientific organizations.

The Journal of Immunology, founded in 1916, is the most highly cited publication in the field of immunology. Dr. Bishop's appointment as editor-in-chief is expected to contribute to the journal's continued success in publishing high-quality manuscripts that advance the field of experimental immunology, including basic and clinical studies.

The American Association of Immunologists (AAI) is an association of scientifically trained professionals dedicated to advancing the knowledge of immunology and related disciplines. It was founded in 1913 and has members from all over the world. AAI owns and publishes The Journal of Immunology, the oldest and most established journal in the field, and ImmunoHorizons, an open-access, peer-reviewed journal focused on immunology.
