Dr. Yuriy Usachev Receives New R01 from NIH/ NINDS

Yuriy Usachev, PhD, John Paul Long Professor in the Department of Neuroscience & Pharmacology, has been awarded a 5-year $2.25 million National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NIH/NINDS) R01 Research Grant entitled “The Mitochondrial Ca2+ Uniporter in the Regulation of Neural Activity and Susceptibility to Seizures.” The goal of this project is to examine the role of the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter (MCU) in regulating the activities of synaptic networks and susceptibility to hyperexcitability and seizures, and findings could lead to the development of new strategies targeting mitochondrial Ca2+ transport and MCU for the treatment of epilepsy, as well as other neurological disorders associated with aberrant neural activity. This project involves collaboration with Dr. Gordon Buchanan, MD/PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology, and Dr. Stefan Strack, PhD, John Paul Long Professor in the Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology.
