Stefan Strack, Yuriy Usachev, and Mark Yorek (Internal Medicine, Veterans Administration) were awarded a multi-PI R01 from the National Institutes for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) entitled “Targeting Mitochondrial Fission for Neuroprotection in Diabetic Neuropathy”. The proposal examines how diabetes affects the structure and function of mitochondria in nerve cells. The proposed studies also test the hypothesis that preventing mitochondrial fragmentation and bioenergetic failure in nerve cells can restore sensory nerve function in diabetes. The results from this research may lead to new treatments for peripheral diabetic neuropathy.
