Dr. David Frisvold speaks on the Impacts of Childhood Obesity

Dr. David Frisvold, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Tippie College of Business and  the OREI recently spoke at the Baltimore Public Policy Forum  focused on childhood obesity. The forum consisted of three presentations to an audience of state, county, and city policymakers and academics.  The presenters Laura Herrera, MD, Deputy Secretary for Public Health Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene discussed state initiatives, Oxiris Barbot, MD, Baltimore City Commissioner of Health discussed city initiatives, while Adele Kirk, Assistant Professor, UMBC Department of Public Policy and David Frisvold discussed the national picture and the evidence of the effectiveness of different policies.   

Frisvold also presented his paper “The Impact of the School Breakfast Program on Childhood Obesity” at the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management conference in Washington, DC and at the Southern Economic Association conference in Tampa, FL. This paper investigates the impact of the availability of the School Breakfast Program (SBP) on childhood obesity.  The SBP is a federal entitlement program that offers subsidized breakfast to low-income students who attend a school that participates in the program.
