Ignacio V. Ponseti Biochemistry and Cell Biology Laboratory

The Ignacio V. Ponseti Orthopedic Biology Laboratory, located at 1182 Medical Laboratories Building, serves as a resource for the conduct of basic and applied biological research directed toward understanding the etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system.  Translational studies within the lab target a variety of musculoskeletal diseases including osteoarthritis, post-traumatic osteoarthritis, arthrofibrosis, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and sarcoma.  Post-traumatic osteoarthritis has been a particular focus of this laboratory and preventative treatments for post-traumatic osteoarthritis using gene therapy, stimulating cartilage regeneration by chondroprogenitor cells, and blocking mitochondrial oxidant production are all in development.  Current benchtop research explores the mechanobiology of both cartilage and connective tissue cells, the role crosstalk between these tissues plays in fibrosis, and a means to diagnose arthritis at earlier stages or interrupt arthritis pathology at later stages. The laboratory works with orthopedic faculty members, fellows, residents, and medical students, as well as undergraduate and graduate biomedical engineering students. Financial support comes from external sources, (federal agencies, foundations, and not-for-profit organizations), as well as from internal funds.
