Matthew Karam, MD

Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation

Introduction

Since joining the faculty in 2011 I have focused my research interests primarily on surgical skills education and surgical simulation techniques. I work collaboratively with multiple labs and groups here at the University of Iowa including our Orthopaedics Biomechanics Laboratory and Human Factors Laboratory in the Department of Engineering. We currently have multiple grants investigating surgical simulations techniques in articular-fracture management, wire navigation with a radiation-free wire navigation simulator, image interpretation, and surgical video capture for use in resident education. Given the current status of graduate medical education with restricted work hours and increased levels of transparency, techniques to ensure surgical proficiency will be increasingly required. It is with this goal in mind, that this line of research is fascinating to me. In the Department of Orthopaedics we have initiated and with great success, began a surgical skills curriculum for PGY-1 resident learners. My goal will be to develop assessment techniques to train junior level learners on skills that will enhance patient safety. I will continue to perform this research within the Department of Orthopaedics and collaborate with multiple groups within our institution at large; including the above mentioned laboratories as well as the UIHC Graduate Medical Education office, the office of Consultation in Research and Medical Education and the Carver College of Medicine.
