Winter 2020 Newsletter

On behalf of the University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, it is my privilege to share with you highlights of our 2019 accomplishments in our strategic areas of clinical care, medical education, medical research, and quality care.

Clinical Care

Ray Eshelman

University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics has the only 24/7 comprehensive hand and microvascular on-call coverage in the state of Iowa, dedicated to the care of patients with severe hand and wrist injuries, including those that need microvascular surgical repair.

Medical Education

vestibular trainingTo ensure that the University of Iowa athletic training program stays on the forefront of modern, high-level medicine, the athletic training education program has moved its curriculum into the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, UI Carver College of Medicine, and all athletic trainers treating student athletes now report to our director of sports medicine.

John Marsh

The 2019 AOA Distinguished Clinician Educator Award was received by J. Lawrence Marsh, MD, FAOA, chairman and tenured professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics for his national achievements in education and role in training medical students, graduate students, residents, and other health care professionals.

Medical Research

Cesar de Cesar Netto

Cesar de Cesar Netto, MD, PhD, is leading the effort to enroll patients with lower extremity deformities in clinical research using the CurveBeam LineUP, a weight-bearing CT system. The University of Iowa is the only site in the state using weight-bearing CT, which delivers 3D imaging for a more complete analysis of bone alignment information.

Quality Care

John Marsh and patients

Communicating with patients is often one of the hardest things we do as physicians. Our new Provider Communication Program provides evidence-based techniques to enhance communication skills to ensure a high-quality, safe health care experience for our patients.
