Scot Heery, RT(R)(CT), was a Senior Imaging Technologist in the Department of Radiology at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC). He had worked in the department for over 30 years at the time of his passing last fall. Thanks to a very generous gift presented to the University of Iowa Center for Advancement in Scot’s name by an anonymous donor, three $5000 scholarship awards will be granted to senior Radiation Sciences Students each year.
Scot graduated from the UIHC Radiologic Technology Program and became an integral member of the Radiology Team. He was best known for his profound knowledge of Computed Tomography, although he was also a mentor, teacher, and dedicated colleague. Scot was committed to finding ways to provide better care for his patients, especially those related to improvements in imaging techniques and equipment. He was not satisfied with the status quo; he believed we should always strive to do better. This motivation was infectious as he helped students understand the basics of diagnostic imaging. Scot served as a member of the Radiologic Technology Program Advisory Committee and supported technologist education as a member of the Iowa Society of Radiologic Technologists. It was, however, his easygoing yet confident manner that applied a personalized method of teaching. This philosophy created an environment conducive to lifelong learning for countless numbers of students. He encouraged them to think critically and excel in their field. Scot was also a resource for imaging professionals nationwide, providing guidance in the development of cutting edge imaging protocols.
A leader in his profession, Scot Heery added to the bank of knowledge in Radiologic Technology, Computed Tomography, and Radiation Sciences. His legacy will continue as students in the Radiation Sciences Programs at the University of Iowa are motivated to model his example of improving patients’ lives through better diagnosis and treatment.
The three 2021-22 applicants whose work ethic and daily commitment to quality patient care most closely aligned with the values and character that Scot Heery portrayed in his distinguished career and expected of Radiation Sciences students are (as pictured left to right):
• Lauren Stewart – Radiologic Technology/CT
• Elise Blatt – Radiologic Technology/CT
• Grace Marburger – Radiologic Technology/CVI
The Scholarship’s Selection Committee, comprised of 7 individuals who knew Scot well, received and reviewed applications from many extremely qualified and deserving students, making the selection process a difficult one.
