On Thursday, March 30, 2017, the investiture ceremony for the Kenneth L. and Gloria D. Krabbenhoft Chair in Radiology was held to honor Colin P. Derdeyn, MD, FACR as recipient of that chairmanship, and to recognize the generosity of the Krabbenhoft family for their endowment.
Dr. Derdeyn received his bachelor's and MD degrees from the University of Virginia. After completing an internship in general surgery and a 1-year residency in neurological surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he decided to pursue training in the newly developing field of interventional neuroradiology. He went on to complete his radiology residency at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine, where he also served as chief resident. Following that, Dr. Derdeyn completed a year as a RSNA Research/Stroke fellow at Washington University and completed a final year of fellowship at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
In 1996, Dr. Derdeyn accepted a position at Barnes Jewish Hospital, a teaching hospital affiliated with Washington University. During his subsequent 20 years at Washington University, he developed a busy clinical clinical practice in endovascular neurointervention and a large multidisciplinary stroke and rehabilitation center. Before joining the Department of Radiology at UIHC, Dr. Derdeyn was professor of radiology, neurology and neurological surgery, as well as the director of the stroke and cerebrovascular center.
Dr. Derdeyn served as past president of the Society for Neurointerventional Surgery and is the current chair of the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. He also serves on the editorial board of Stroke and the American Journal of Neuroradiology, and sits on the NINDS Clinical Trials Special Emphasis Panel.
Dr. Derdeyn has been named a Best Doctor in America and holds several device patents aimed to treat aneurysms. He also chairs the Scientific Advisory Board for Pulse Therapeutics, which is developing a novel treatment for stroke.
Kenneth L. Krabbenhoft, MD
Kenneth L. Krabbenhoft, MD, served as chair of the Department of Radiology at Wayne State University and was the director of the American Board of Radiology. A native of Iowa, he received his undergraduate and MD degrees from The University of Iowa. His medical school training was interrupted for a period of two years, during which he served in World War II, but was completed in 1946 after he was discharged from the military.
Dr. Krabbenhoft completed his internship and radiology residency at Harper Hospital in Detroit. He later went on to accept a position at Wayne State University, and later became chair of the Radiology Department, a position he held from 1969 to 1986. He actively served on committees with the American Roentgen Ray Society as well as the American College of Radiology.
In 1971, a bill signed by President Richard Nixon created two cancer advisory groups, and Dr. Krabbenhoft was appointed to one of them as a diagnostic radiologist.
Because Dr. Krabbenhoft and his wife, Gloria Erickson Krabbenhoft, had fond memories of their time at the UI and in Iowa City, they created the Kenneth L. and Gloria D. Krabbenhoft Chair in Radiology, which is an endowed position held by the chair of the department.
Gloria passed away in 2003, and Dr. Krabbenhoft followed her in 2010 at the age of 87. They are survived by their three children: Kenneth Jr., Douglas and Karen.
The University of Iowa Department of Radiology is deeply grateful for their very generous gift and honor the memory of Kenneth and Gloria Krabbenhoft.
