William D. Middleton

Joyce and Edward Barloon Abdominal Imaging Lectureship Visiting Professor Presents:

William Middleton, MD, Professor of Radiology
Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO

William D. Middleton is acknowledged as the architect behind the expansion and subsequent international recognition of the ultrasound service at Washington University School of Medicine. He developed and expanded the MSK ultrasound service at Washington University and has passionately promoted the technique nationally. His reputation led to his invitation to provide ultrasound imaging for injured athletes at the 2002 Olympic Games. His unique technical skills as an ultrasonographer also led to dramatic increases in the use of Doppler to study the abdominal vasculature and the use of ultrasound to guide percutaneous needle biopsies throughout the body. A national leader in ultrasound, he is a fellow, charter member, and is currently an officer in the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU). He has worked closely with the SRU and the ACR to develop a Thyroid Imaging, Reporting and Data System (TIRADS).  In addition to authoring over 150 articles, Dr. Middleton’s textbook, Ultrasound: The Requisites, in its 3rd edition, is considered the core text for ultrasound. A highly sought after lecturer, he has delivered the Lawrence Mack Memorial Lecture at AIUM and the Sterling Winthrop Lecture at the AFIP.  Dr. Middleton has impacted the lives of thousands of patients through his inspiration and education of residents, fellows and technologists.
