Buprenorphine (Suboxone®, Subutex®) is an opioid partial agonist used as substitution therapy in patients recovering from opioid addiction. Similar to methadone, buprenorphine helps manage opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms. The Buprenorphine Compliance Screen first uses an immunoassay that targets norbuprenorphine, the main metabolite of buprenorphine.  Patients that are compliant with buprenorphine therapy should test positive with the screening test. With this compliance panel, if the screening is positive, then there is no further testing. However, if the screening is negative, then there is reflex to the quantitative mass spectrometry-based assay for buprenorphine and multiple buprenorphine metabolites.  The testing is useful as a means to monitor compliance with therapy.
