Career in genetic counseling educational session

Date: Friday, July 22, 2016

Thinking about a career in genetic counseling?

The Iowa Institute of Human Genetics is hosting an educational session for students who want to learn more about the profession and about applying to genetic counseling master’s programs. The session on “Personalized Genomic Medicine: Applying to Genetic Counseling Graduate Programs” will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, in the Eckstein Medical Research Building (EMRB 283) at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.

The need for certified genetic counselors in the United States is growing, with the workforce expected to increase by 29 percent within the next 10 years.

Students attending the event will learn about genetic counseling, applying to genetic counseling master programs, and job growth in the field. Attendees will also have an opportunity to network with genetic counselors currently practicing in Iowa.

Genetic counselors help people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological, and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease. A genetic counselor’s job involves interpreting family and medical histories to assess the chance of disease occurrence or recurrence, educating patients and families about inheritance, testing, management, prevention, resources, and research, and counseling patients and their families to promote informed choices and adaptation to the risk or condition.

The event will include a short introduction to personalized genomic medicine, followed by a panel discussion and breakout session where participants can talk with panelists and current interns in the Genetic Counseling Internship program at the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics.

Undergraduate students, academic advisors, and graduate students wishing to learn more about applying to genetic counseling training programs are encouraged to attend this event.
