Policeni named chair of UI Department of Radiology

Interim chair has been a UI faculty member for nearly two decades

Bruno Policeni, MD, MBA, has been appointed chair and departmental executive officer of the Department of Radiology in the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, effective Feb. 26.

Policeni, a faculty member in the department since 2006, has served as interim chair of the department since Dec. 1, 2023. He succeeded Colin Derdeyn, MD, who had led the department since 2015.

“Dr. Policeni has done a great job leading the department in an interim basis, and I’m pleased that he will continue in this role as chair,” says Denise Jamieson, MD, MPH, UI vice president for medical affairs and the Tyrone D. Artz Dean of the Carver College of Medicine. “Bruno is an outstanding collaborator, and he excels at all aspects of patient care, education and training, and research. He’s highly respected by his colleagues in the radiology department and across our health system. He’s a good communicator and a positive relationship-builder, and he leads by example with integrity and fairness. We’re fortunate to have Bruno as a member of our leadership team, and I know he will continue to do an outstanding job leading the department moving forward.” 

Policeni is a clinical professor and an internationally recognized neuroradiologist whose research and clinical interests include head and neck cancer, stroke, and disorders of the brain and spine. He serves on the radiology residency review committee for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and he chairs the American College of Radiology appropriateness criteria for brain, head and neck, and spine imaging. 

Before becoming interim chair, Policeni served as the Department of Radiology’s vice chair for education and for clinical operations. He also directed the department’s neuroradiology fellowship program. Among his departmental accomplishments, he established a leadership training program for medical directors and managers as well as a quality and safety program.

Bruno is an outstanding collaborator, and he excels at all aspects of patient care, education and training, and research. He’s highly respected by his colleagues in the radiology department and across our health system.

Policeni is a member of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI. He also holds secondary faculty appointments in the Carver College of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology and the UI College of Dentistry Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine.

Policeni earned an MD degree from the Faculdade de Medicina Valenca College of Medicine in Rio d Janeiro, Brazil in 2001. He completed residency training in diagnostic radiology at Brazil’s National Institute of Cancer in Rio de Janeiro. He completed a fellowship in neuroradiology at UI Hospitals & Clinics before joining the Department of Radiology. He received an MBA degree from the UI Tippie College of Business in 2016.
