Funding Opportunity

2022 SARS-CoV-2 Pilot Grant Program (COVID-19 Pilot) New and Renewal Projects

About

The Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) is seeking applications for the SARS-CoV-2 Pilot Grant Program (COVID-19 Pilot) funded by a generous $1 million gift from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust (Carver Trust). This new funding is in addition to the original $1 million gift received in the fall of 2020. The Carver Trust recognizes the University of Iowa as performing high impact research on COVID-19. The CCOM is delighted to work with the Carver Trust to establish a COVID-19 Research Program to enhance the community of COVID-19 research by making improvements to the BSL3 facility and sponsoring this pilot grant program aimed at funding highly impactful and innovative research into the fundamental aspects and biology of the virus.

Purpose

Important new knowledge may be uncovered if scientists have the opportunity to explore new ideas which arise spontaneously or that emerge during the course of ongoing investigations. The purpose of the Carver COVID-19 Pilot program is to acquire new and needed knowledge of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and help develop future questions and studies. The pilot grants are meant to begin a robust research project that should serve as the foundation for a long-term goal that can merit extramural funding. This Carver Charitable Trust COVID-19 pilot program is aimed at making new discoveries about COVID-19 pathogenesis and SARS-CoV-2 biology (clinical trials are not eligible). Ideas articulated in previous proposals that have been reviewed by the NIH yet found to require additional data are highly encouraged. Preference will be given to investigators who are not currently heavily supported by collegiate funds.

Funding Type

There are two types of projects that will be funded:

  1. Individual Lab projects – Award Total up to $50,000
  2. Collaborating Teams of 2 or more – Award Total up to $75,000

Investigators can submit either a new proposal application or a renewal application for an existing pilot grant.
