The overall goal of the Dermatology research program at The University of Iowa is to better understand genetic, autoimmune and neoplastic disorders of the skin. Current projects include: i) investigation of the structure and function of the basement membrane zone ii) investigation into the pathogenesis of the autoimmune blistering diseases of the skin iii) development of molecular based therapies for autoimmune and genetic disorders of the skin iv) molecular characterization of cutaneous neoplasms. The research program includes basic science, translational and clinical elements. Research is supported in the department by the National Institutes of Health, Veterans Administration, Dermatology Foundation and private endowments. Potential mentors include: Janet Fairley, MD, Kelly Messingham, PhD, and Brian Swick, MD.

This is a one year program available in “Basic and Translational Cutaneous Biology”. The program is open to M.D.s or M.D./Ph.D.s who have completed their dermatology residency training and are preparing for a career in academic medicine. Extension for up to three years is possible.
