Interactive Data Visualization with Plotly in R workshop
1. Overview
This workshop introduces the basic functionality of plotly in R, a library that makes interactive data visualization. The workshop is taught using RStudio in the Interactive Data Analytics Service (IDAS).
2. Prerequisites
Familiarity with RStudio, plus knowledge of basic concepts and features of R
3. Eligibility
This workshop is available to current University of Iowa members who have an active affiliation with the University at the time of the workshop.
4. How to register
Click HERE then log in with your HawkID and password. Click “Register now” at the bottom of the page to register. After registering successfully, an automated email with a Zoom link will be sent to your University of Iowa email. Registration will close at noon on Thursday, Nov. 24, 2022.

- Introduction and log in to the workshop computing environment
- A brief overview of R Markdown
- Getting started with `plotly`
- `plotly` foundational syntax: `plot_ly()`, `add_trace()` and `layout()`
- Scatter plots
- Bar charts
Day 2:
- Log in to the workshop computing environment
- `add_trace()`
- Grouped bar charts
- Stacked bar charts
- Tools for data visualization: text labels, titles, axis text, colors
- Summary of plotly attributes
Day 3:
- Log in to the workshop computing environment
- Line Plots
- Time Series Data
- Choropleth Maps
- Adjusting for Population in Mapping
