The November DNA Interest Group meeting will be a free film screening of “Thank You For Coming,” a powerful documentary about friendship, genealogy, DNA, and the meaning of family in today’s changing world (the film is 85 minutes). After the screening, there will be a Q&A with the director, Sara Lamm, who will be participating via a videoconference.
Lamm discovered as an adult that she was conceived via a sperm donor. With humor and compassion, she hunts for the donor and documents the surprising connections she makes along the way. When she meets a potential half-sibling, she gets a break in the case – using DNA and genetic genealogy, the two team up to search together, investigating nature, nurture, and their shared drive to know the truth. The film sparks meaningful conversation about parenthood, childhood, creativity, human connection, and love.

The DNA Interest Group is designed to bring together individuals in the Iowa City area interested in learning about the use and interpretation of commercial DNA test results. Meetings will address a variety of different topical areas including applications in genealogy, inferences of traits, exploration of human genetic variation, and the societal impact of these services.
