Iowa Laminopathy Network - Uniting Research & Education

Interested in both research and education?  Come meet former FUTURE in Biomedicine Program Fellows and learn how they unite research and education with the Iowa Laminopathy Network.

Background information:

On Saturday, May 4, the “First Annual Laminopathy Summit “ was held at the Waterloo, Iowa Public Library. The summit featured the productive collaboration between the laboratories of Lori Wallrath, PhD (Biochemistry, U of Iowa), Gary Coombs, PhD (Biology, Waldorf University) and Laura Hecker, PhD (Biology, Clarke University). As former FUTURE fellows, Drs. Coombs and Hecker have extended the summer research they performed in the Wallrath lab into their teaching classrooms. The following oral presentations were delivered:

  1. “LINCing the nuclear envelope and muscular dystrophy”: Nicholas Shaw (Wallrath Lab)
  2. “A genomics-informed investigation of the effect of TGF-beta signaling in Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy”: Grace Engelmann and Tanner Schmitz (Coombs Lab)
  3. Lamin C mutagenesis by PCR SOE and Gibson Assembly”: Jennet Hojanazarova (Coombs Lab)
  4. “Characterization of myosin heavy chain expression in muscular dystrophy and lipodystrophy”: Christian Haffner and Megan Markin (Hecker Lab)
  5. “Characterization of Armadillo expression in muscular dystrophy and lipodystrophy”: Rebecca Underwood (Clarke Lab)

Meg Ketter and Delaney Dicus were also in attendance.
