The Adult Hospitalist Care Program at University of Iowa Health Care was established in 2000 with the hire of two physicians experienced in hospital medicine. Today, the Adult Hospitalist Care Program comprises 45 hospitalists, all general internal medicine physicians. These hospitalists work on a variety of inpatient services that include:
- General Medicine Service
- Resident Staffed Inpatient Medicine Service
- Attending Only Inpatient Medicine Service
- Surgical Co-management Service
- Cardiovascular Hospitalist Service
- VA Inpatient Service
These services are a mix of both resident and non-resident staffed services. Non-resident staffed services are supported by an advanced registered nurse practitioner or registered nurse.
At UIHC, hospitalists “touch” over 7,200 patients every year. This constitutes roughly 20% of all acute inpatient admissions based on the UIHC 2019 Annual Report.
