This faculty position rank is open within the clinical track based on candidate of choice qualifications and interview evaluation (tenure track, clinical track or Associate (non-track) option based on identified candidate).  The candidate of choice will be a licensed physician and a UI Carver College of Medicine faculty member with recent medical practice experience in an academic medical center comprising inpatient, outpatient and procedural activity. 



This is a two-year appointment, renewable. The physician recruited to this position will dedicate at least 50 percent effort to the role of CMIO and up to 50 percent will be spent maintaining an active medical practice and providing patient care in an appropriate clinical setting. The position reports to the UI Health Care Chief Information Officer and the UIP Executive Director.



Position Summary and Responsibilities – Chief Medical Information Officer:



The Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) position rank is an open within the clinical track (tenure track, clinical track or Associate (non-track) option based on identified candidate) and is responsible for supporting the development of information systems that assist clinicians in the delivery of high quality patient care in an academic setting. The CMIO represents the needs and requirements of the physician community and serves as an advocate of Health Care Information Systems (HCIS) in promoting the use of information technology in the clinical setting. The CMIO directs the HCIS Clinical Informatics Division, is an integral member of the Health Care Information Systems department and is responsible for optimizing existing enterprise systems for clinicians and translating clinician requirements into specifications for new enterprise systems.





  • Creates and supervises clinical optimization teams consisting of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, ancillary staff and other providers to review and enhance system utilization and configuration to improve the efficiency and outcomes of clinical care.




  • Leads, facilitates and chairs clinician advisory groups in the design of clinical systems to support excellence in patient care, education and research. Engages patient care providers in varying roles including physicians, pharmacists, nursing practitioners, nursing staff, ancillary department personnel, and medical records professionals to contribute to the development and use of the clinical information system. Builds relationships with physicians to gain support of IT initiatives. Is highly responsive to users needs, including training, to assure wide spread acceptance and provider use of the clinical systems.




  • Engages and builds relationships with patient care providers in varying roles including physicians, pharmacists, nursing practitioners, nursing staff, ancillary department personnel, and medical records professionals to gain support of IT initiatives and to contribute to the development and use of the clinical information system.




  • Reviews medical informatics trends, experiences and approaches, develops technical and application implementation strategies and assists in the development of strategic plans for clinical information systems.




  • Works as a team member of HCIS to design and supervise the implementation of systems supporting patient care, education and research activities. Advises HCIS staff on systems configuration and support issues.




  • Leads development of clinical rules supporting patient care and protocol research as well as the design of clinical system features supporting protocol management and the use of the system to leverage the clinicians' time and maximize communication with affiliates and referring physicians.




  • Serves as a member of the Hospital Information Systems Advisory Subcommittee, Health Information Management Subcommittee and other UI Health Care committees.




  • Provides clinical leadership in the development and deployment of solutions that cluster information in disease and episodic categories for benchmarking, clinical severity, public reporting and variance analysis. Designs and evaluates collection of data for clinical purposes, including tracking and interpretation of outcomes.




  • Assumes a leadership position in reviewing regional and national trends, experiences and approaches in health information systems to identify best practices that assist in the development of clinical health information strategies.Actively participates in regional and national initiatives relating to health care information technology.




  • Works with the leaders of research and education programs to ensure that academic and research needs are taken into account when planning and implementing clinical systems for patient care.




  • Facilitates planning and implementation for the integration of clinical and research databases.




  • Maintains an active medical practice in area of specialty and provides patient care in appropriate clinical setting.

Position Details:

The Division of General Internal Medicine of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine is seeking to hire a BC/BE physician investigator with a focus in rural health research. The successful candidate will be hired as an Associate, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in the Tenure Track. Rank will be based upon experience and/or productivity.  This will be a split appointment with funding being 5/8th VA and 3/8th University of Iowa. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an independently-funded rural health research program in collaboration with investigators in the Center for Comprehensive Access and Delivery Research and Evaluation (CADRE) and the Veterans Rural Health Resource Center (VRHRC) at the Iowa City VA.  Opportunities for collaboration and faculty appointment are available at the Rural Policy Research Institute (RUPRI) and Center for Rural Prevention Research within the University of Iowa College of Public Health.



Possible areas of focus may include, but are not limited to: development and evaluation of interventions to improve access to high quality healthcare in rural settings, rural healthcare workforce, studies of health determinants and outcomes for rural populations, and rural health policy. Individuals hired at the Rank of Assistant Professor or higher are expected to have a track record of peer-reviewed publications and a clear plan for developing independent research funding in the area of rural health research.  Publications with a focus on Rural Health are desirable.



The successful candidate must have an MD degree and demonstrate evidence of advanced training in disciplines applicable to rural health research, such as clinical or basic epidemiology, health economics, outcomes research, demography, biostatistics, or related methodologies.  A MS, MPH, or PhD degree or equivalent in research methods or education is desired.  The successful candidate must be authorized to work in the U.S.

The Division of General Internal Medicine within the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine is seeking an experienced physician-investigator with expertise in primary care redesign and health services research.  The incumbent would be responsible for leading a team of primary care physicians, PhDs, and other research support personnel and would direct projects involving the medical home model of care.  Clinical care associated with this position will be through affiliated programs at the Iowa City VA and/or at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  The successful candidate will work within the Comprehensive Access and Delivery Research and Evaluation Center (CADRE), a VA Health Services Research and Development Center of Innovation at the Iowa City VAMC. The Center includes physician, nurse, and PhD investigators as well extensive support staff in statistics, data analysis and management, medical anthropology, and qualitative research methods.  This highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research Center creates an ideal environment for primary care research and redesign.  The position also offers opportunities for collaborations with investigators at the Institute for Clinical Translational Science, an NIH CTSA program housed at the University of Iowa.
