The University of Iowa Department of Internal Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases is seeking an ABIM board eligible or board-certified Infectious Diseases physician at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, or Clinical Professor. This position will involve inpatient and outpatient consultative care for general Infectious Disease patients at the University of Iowa Heath Care Medical Center on the University campus, Medical Center Downtown (MCD; community setting), and possibly limited time at Medical Center North Liberty (Orthopedic-ID consultation). Participation in an antimicrobial stewardship program at MCD may be included as well.

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:


The Associate Director of Clinical Research (ADCR) is a critical leadership position within the cancer center, responsible for overseeing and advancing clinical research in alignment with the objectives of the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and National Cancer Institute (NCI) standards. This MD-level Associate role provides strategic direction for the clinical trials portfolio, leads key oversight committees including the Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee and Data and Safety Monitoring Board, and ensures efficient trial activation, robust accrual, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. The ADCR will also play a central role in mentoring junior investigators, supporting faculty development, and guiding initiatives that expand access to clinical trials and ensure equitable representation of patients across the catchment area.


Candidates must possess an MD with a strong academic background in oncology and a demonstrated record of leadership in clinical trial execution. Completion of an ACGME-accredited Residency Program is required.


This position will be for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Full Professor in either the tenure or clinical track (non-tenure track), depending on qualifications and experience. This position is essential to maintaining the center’s NCI comprehensive designation and advancing its mission to deliver cutting-edge cancer research and care.


CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Serve as a member of the Cancer Center Executive Committee.

  • Supervises the activities of, and assures synergy between, the committees and offices that support and oversee clinical research in the HCCC including the Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee, the Data and Safety Monitoring Board, the Clinical Trials Development, Support and Monitoring Office, and the Clinical Trials Support Core.

  • Serves as a leader to HCCC members regarding faculty areas of expertise and clinical research collaborations.

  • Provides guidance regarding clinical research recruitment opportunities; participates on search committees; interviews candidates; reviews curriculum vitas and provides recommendations.

  • Assists the Director with grant submissions, including but not limited to the writing and assembly of grants.

  • Reviews and provides recommendations on clinical and translational science seed grant applications, for example, Pipeline Acceleration for Cancer Therapeutics (PACT) initiative.

  • Reviews and provides recommendations regarding the assignment of clinical research space within the HCCC.

  • Serves on various other internal and external committees relative to clinical research activities of the HCCC.

  • Provides guidance to Director on decisions concerning the use of endowments, grant support and other resources as they relate to clinical research activities.

  • Participates with the Director in fundraising activities.

  • Participates with the Director in National Cancer Institute (NCI) visits and conferences for NCI designated cancer center leadership.

  • Collaborates at the regional and national levels to develop innovative therapeutic trials through the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium and the National Clinical Trial Network Alliance (and other collaborative trial groups).

  • Recommends nominees for institutional and national grant opportunities and awards.

This position has reporting authority over the Clinical Research Services Core, the Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee, Data Safety and Monitoring Committee, the Clinical Trials Development, Support and Monitoring Office, and other HCCC resources intended to support clinical research (for example, MOG leadership).

The University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Blood & Marrow Transplantation are seeking multiple BC/BE hematologists with a focus on adult benign hematology or benign and malignant hematology to join their faculty team in a growing practice. Also desirable are hematologists with clinical training in the diagnosis, management, and research of Sickle Cell Disease. This position will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Full Professor to either the tenure or clinical track (non-tenure track), depending on qualifications and experience. Appointment to the rank of Instructor (non-track) may also be considered.


The Carver College of Medicine is part of a major research university and ranks 19th among public universities in NIH research funding. The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center that collaborates closely with the College and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A particular strength of the program is a growing portfolio of investigator-initiated and phase I trials including many based-on research being conducted in University of Iowa laboratories. The hospital is one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the United States and is adjacent to the Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.


The Division of Hematology-Oncology and Blood & Marrow Transplantation has a broad mission, spanning benign and malignant hematology and solid tumor oncology. Division faculty lead more than 200 active clinical research trials at any given time for a wide range of cancers and blood disorders and operate Iowa’s only FACT-accredited bone marrow transplant unit. The division provides services at University of Iowa Health Care, the Iowa City VA Medical Center, and at several regional outreach sites in southeast Iowa.

Key Responsibilities include:



  • Patient Care: Conduct thorough evaluations of patients, including obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, and ordering diagnostic tests to determine the underlying causes of endocrine and metabolic disorders. Perform duties at outpatient clinics at various clinic locations in and around Iowa City.

  • Diagnosis and Treatment: Develop and implement individualized treatment plans to include dietary guidance, physical activity recommendations, behavioral strategies, and appropriate medical interventions.

  • Patient Education: Inform patients about their conditions and provide guidance on lifestyle modifications, including dietary recommendations and exercise regimens to improve health outcomes.

  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other faculty members to enhance the division’s clinical services and research initiatives. Participate in interdisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes.

  • Research and Teaching: Participate in clinical research initiatives related to endocrinology and metabolism. Mentor medical students, residents, and other healthcare staff in best practices for managing endocrine diseases.

  • Compliance: Ensure adherence to all relevant regulations and standards of care, including HIPAA compliance.
