Research Summary

My research interest is in the area mechanism of airway innate immunity. Currently, my laboratory has been investigating the effects of ambient particulate matter impairment of airway antimicrobial activity. In addition, I am interested in developing strategies that will improve the airway antimicrobial activity, with the purpose of decreasing the risk of respiratory infections. Also, my laboratory is studying the mechanisms of lung injury and repair, with an especial emphasis on distal lung progenitor cells. I have a broad background in clinical pulmonary medicine, specifically asthma and COPD. Since I became the Clinical Director of several COPD studies at the University of Iowa, and principal investigator of several COPD clinical trials, including NIH and industry, we have created an extensive data base of COPD subjects, all at different stages of their disease. We have several proposals submitted or in preparation to study mechanism of COPD exacerbations as well as therapeutic interventions to decrease the risk of COPD exacerbations. In addition, as Director of the ICTS Clinical Research Unit at the University, we have access to a broad array of resources to perform clinical trials, including a dedicated research bronchoscopy suite and state of the art cardiopulmonary laboratory.
