Amy M. Dowden, MD
Introduction
Amy Dowden is a Clinical Associate Professor in Allergy and Immunology. She completed her Allergy and Immunology Fellowship training at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and received her Masters in Medical Education from the University of Iowa. Her main clinical interest is in drug allergy and resultant antibiotic stewardship. She is additionally interested in medical education. She is the Associate Program Director for the Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program. She serves as Vice Chair for the Allergy and Immunology In-Training examination committee and Vice Chair for the Core Curriculum, Education and Residency Review subcommittee for the Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI). She is Strand director for Medicine and Society (MAS) in the Carver College of Medicine which consists of 3 consecutive integrated courses in which students learn about disease prevention, health promotion services, public health, epidemiology, health services organizations and delivery, and community dimensions of medical practice. She initiated a multidisciplinary outpatient Drug Allergy Clinic with pharmacy in 2013. She is involved in multidisciplinary collaboration for inpatient drug allergy de-labeling and antibiotic stewardship. She has publications in this area. She sees value in the penicillin de-labeling process including shorter hospital stays, cost savings and overall decreased mortality. Current projects include expansion of the drug allergy clinic and development of inpatient drug allergy algorithms.
