Research Summary

Dr. Burns was actively engaged in tumor biology research supported by the NIH for more than 3 decades. His focus was the relationship of membrane lipids, cancer drug transport, and oxidative events. Clinically, he has been study-chair of two Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) phase I and phase 2 trials, and co-chair of a CALGB acute lymphoblastic leukemia study. He is a consultant for the National Institutes of Health and the Health Research Board, Republic of Ireland. He is now Chair of the Medical Executive Committee, member of the Board of Directors and a volunteer physician at a large free medical clinic in South Carolina with 700 volunteers and more than 33,000 patient visits a year.
