Computational & Molecular Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry created the Division of Computational and Molecular Psychiatry to combine cutting edge neuroscience, genetic, and pharmacological approaches so that we can better understand brain function and behavior.

Mental health is one of the most important public health issues of our time, yet demand for these services far outpaces the field’s ability to fulfill the need. New technologies and approaches need to be applied to make the mental health care more efficient and effective. The University of Iowa is continuing its tradition of empirical, biological psychiatry research by bringing together clinicians, basic scientists, and informaticians to advance the new field of computational psychiatry.  A joint effort of the Department of Psychiatry, the Iowa Neuroscience Institute, and the Iowa Informatics Initiative (UI3), the computational psychiatry group seeks to use the power of computing to improve the understanding, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental conditions.

The computational psychiatry group meets monthly to exchange ideas, share research findings, and strategize about new collaborative efforts.  To learn more about the group, contact Jake Michaelson at jacob-michaelson@uiowa.edu.
