Neurological, neurodevelopmental, and psychiatric disorders represent a significant physical, emotional, and financial burden on the individuals and families impacted by these disorders, as well as substantial financial costs to society. The ultimate goal of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute is to understand the inner workings of the brain and nervous system with the hope of improving our understanding of the illnesses affecting them and develop novel therapeutic approaches. A number of clinical departments -- including neurology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, anesthesia, radiology, and psychiatry at the University of Iowa -- provide world-class clinical care to the people of Iowa and the world.

The Iowa Neuroscience Institute houses world-class scientists leading to cutting-edge discoveries in basic neuroscience. To capitalize on these discoveries, the Iowa Neuroscience Institute will also be the first to develop and test them in humans with particular brain and neurological diseases. These efforts will contribute to the overall development of the University of Iowa into a destination for individuals with particular disorders, such as epilepsy, pain, hearing loss, stroke and traumatic brain injury, mood and anxiety disorders or autism.
