Introduction

Heath Davis, MS, ITIL, FAMIA, is a trusted Information Technology leader who communicates and coordinates enterprise information technology services across campus to advance the research mission of the University.  They lead the Biomedical Informatics Core, ensuring efficient service delivery and ongoing enhancement of informatics services.  The ecosystem of informatics research services includes:

  • the Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) data platform, which includes the building of a REDCap External Module and a Twilio Integration
  • Mobilizing the Participant Voice using MyCap
  • TrinetX, a self-service tool for querying data from the electronic health record
  • an Enterprise Data Warehouse for Research (EDW4R)
  • a robust Clinical Research Data Request Service
  • leveraging Electronic Health Record (EHR) tools for research, such as the Epic Research Module, Research Adverse Events, Build it yourself (BIY) research order set toolkit, Research Best Practice Advisories (BPAs), SlicerDicer, Reporting Workbench, and MyChart for participant engagement recruitment
  • UI BioShare, a unified bio-specimen repository for research
  • EMERSE, a medical record search engine that is a tool for discovering unstructured data, and
  • the Iowa Health Data Resource (IHDR) Data Enclave, a secure data enclave to support machine learning, AI, and big data initiatives using data from the electronic health record

Heath shares innovative ideas, designs, and orchestrates, executes a variety of cutting-edge informatics solutions for numerous institutional and externally sponsored research initiatives, serving both as an advisor and a co-investigator.  Heath is also the Assistant Director for the Iowa Health Data Resource (IHDR), a three-year strategic project to improve access to real-world health data, boost interdisciplinary collaboration, and improve literacy about health data. The project’s goals include improving the understanding and availability of health data on campus, building transformative data sets for health science research, and establishing a data enclave to enable big data and AI approaches to health and biomedical science.
