Omar Shaban’s decision to become a physician started while his sister was a patient at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and now he will train with those same doctors as a medical student here.
Get to know Omar and what he is looking forward to over the next four years.
Why do you want to be a physician?
I want to be a physician because of my sister. Growing up, my sister had health problems and although it was difficult on my family, it exposed me to many health care specialties and fields. The physician’s ability to diagnose and care for my sister inspired me to pursue a career in medicine.
Why did you decide to come to the Carver College of Medicine?
I decided to come to the Carver College of Medicine because of the genuine support system I felt at Carver. Even on my interview day, I felt welcomed and supported by the faculty and staff, and this feeling of support has not wavered since. I feel that the faculty and staff continue to support me and encourage me to succeed and they continue to maintain my best interests at heart, whether relating to academics or my own well-being.
What are you looking forward to most about medical school?
I’m looking forward to getting early hands on experience with clinicians and learning more about the different specialties available to choose from.
What advice would you give to those currently applying to medical school?
Be patient. It’s a long process full of uncertainty and lots of unknowns, but it will all be worth it when you get that acceptance letter!
Top reason you chose Iowa for medical school?
I chose Iowa for medical school because of the level of care I received here. Growing up my family would receive our care from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and I wanted to learn from the physicians that cared for and continue to care for my family.
What are some of your personal interests?
Some of my personal interests include playing basketball with friends and video scrapbooking. I’m always down to rewatch an episode of Friends!
