Research Summary

I’m a developmental psychologist with a strong interest in statistical modeling of trait- and state-level behavioral data to better understand self-regulation in multiple domains across the life span. Early in life, I focus on self-regulation in affective and executive function domains and ask how personality based individual differences and familial processes determine adaptive and maladaptive outcomes in mental health. Middle to later years in life, I focus on self-regulation in safety relevant decision making environments, specifically driving, and ask how differences in personality and cognition affect functioning in this domain. A better understanding of self-regulatory processes and how they bear on tactical and strategic decisions we make while driving has both narrow and broad implications. Self-regulatory processes observed in the driving context can serve as behavioral markers of healthy brain and body functioning in the narrow sense (e.g. marker of poor aging or disease) and informs both personal and public safety outcomes in the broader sense (e.g. safety on the roadways). A common thread that characterizes my thinking across both lines of research is methodological pluralism with reliance on rigorous and comprehensive observation of behavior at multiple levels of analysis as it unfolds in its natural ecology. This emphasis permits enriched objective assessments of behavior without precluding reliance on experimental methodological frameworks and easily incorporates advanced sensor technologies (e.g. tracking sleep and circadian functioning with actigraphy). Both lines of inquiry also have public policy implications. This thread has led to grant proposals that are situated to investigate the role of sleep in neurodegenerative disease processes (and may be funded in the near-term for a project with MCI+ and MCI- participants).
