What is StrokeNet?

StrokeNet is a research network created by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2013 to efficiently conduct clinical trials and research studies to advance acute stroke treatment, stroke prevention, and recovery and rehabilitation following a stroke.  Click here for more information.

What is the UIRCC?

The University of Iowa Regional Coordinating Center (UIRCC) is one of 25 regional centers of StrokeNet across the U.S. The UIRCC is coordinated at the University of Iowa and includes 14 collaborating hospitals as satellite centers in Iowa, Nebraska and North Dakota (please see our PDF icon Iowa Strokenet Partner Map for locations)

Why is a Stroke Clinical Trial Network Important?

Clinical trials are crucial to improve the outcome of Americans that suffer a stroke. However, there are important administrative, geographical and logistical barriers to enroll patients in trials. This networks aims to improve efficiency by having a permanent structure ready to perform trials, and accessible to patients living in rural areas.

Who are we?

The Principal Investigator of the UIRCC is Dr. Enrique Leira, MD, MS.  The Co-PI is Dr. Harold Adams, MD.  The UIRCC Coordinator is Heena Olalde, RN, MSN.

Is there an Education component?

StrokeNet is dedicated to train the next generation of Stroke researchers by supporting a one year fellowship for exceptional candidates involving research training.  List of past and current UIRCC fellows can be access here (coming soon). In order to apply to be a UIRCC fellow click here (coming soon).

How can I help with this initiative?

If you are interested in helping improve the outcomes of 800,000 Americans who have a stroke every year (the leading cause of disability in this country), then I encourage you, your family, and your friends to participate in stroke clinical trials. You can also encourage your representatives to support increased federal funding for research.  If you are interesting in exploring donations please visit the Department of Neurology's University of Iowa foundation page.
