Divison Director

The Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) at the University of Iowa are experts in well-person care and physiologic birth grounded in evidence-based practice.

The Midwifery Division aims to:

  1. Empower clients and families to reach their optimal health through shared decision-making.
  2. Educate future healthcare providers that embrace a model of collaborative, team-based care.
  3. Initiate and participate in research that enhances the quality of care for people in Iowa and beyond.
  4. Promote an approach to care that is respectful and professional.
  5. Engage in and model respectful and effective communication with patients, peers and the healthcare team.
  6. Participate in system-wide and state initiatives that allow us to contribute to the improvement of health.

The Midwifery Practice was established at UIHC in 1993 with two midwives. The Midwifery Division boasts twelve excellent Nurse-Midwives who provide full scope, evidence-based obstetric and gynecologic care in Iowa. The midwives have clinics at main campus, Iowa River Landing, North Dodge, Muscatine, Washington and Cedar Rapids. Aside from caring for patients and their families, the CNMs are also faculty in the Carver College of Medicine. The CNMs have many learners in their clinics and in labor and delivery, including midwifery students, medical students, PA and NP students and residents. The midwives earned pre-accreditation in 2022 for the first midwifery education program in Iowa, which will start in the fall of 2023.

In addition to clinical service and education, the midwives also participate in research. Some current initiatives include Outpatient Cervical Ripening, Breastfeeding, and focus on DEI work.
