A Message from Nitin J. Karandikar, MD, PhD
Chair and Department Executive Officer
Dr. Richard G. Lynch Chair in Experimental Pathology

Welcome to The University of Iowa's Department of Pathology!

The Department is part of UI Health Care, a comprehensive health sciences center that serves Iowa and the region, as well as patients referred from the United States and overseas. We are proud of our reputation for excellence in patient care, education and research. There is a long history of accomplishments in this storied department (see link at left) and we aim to build on this rich history toward continued excellence in the future. All these accomplishments are the fruits of the efforts of the faculty and staff in the department, who approach our mission with singular dedication, and the rich environment of UI Health Care that nurtures such success. I consider myself fortunate to have the opportunity to help navigate this department in the coming years.

Our Vision is to be an internationally recognized academic department. This vision is intrinsically tied with our goals of providing excellent care to the patients of today and preparing ourselves to provide excellent care to the patients of tomorrow. Contained within these goals is our mission of outstanding clinical service, disease-oriented research and education of the next generation of physicians, pathologists, laboratory technicians and scientists. We aim to accomplish this mission by creating a collegial environment that provides fertile ground for the faculty and staff's development and success.

The Clinical Laboratories are well recognized for providing outstanding and comprehensive care to the patients we serve. The breadth and depth of services provided are amongst the best in the country. The educational programs that the department participates in includes medical students, clinical laboratory scientists as well as biomedical scientists. The broad spectrum and quality of our teaching programs are widely recognized. Similarly, there is outstanding scholarship in the department. Historically, we have had international recognition for our research in the field of immunology and cerebral vascular disease. More recently, the focus has also included apoptosis and cancer biology and we will continue to build thematically on these strengths in the future.

I am very optimistic about our future as we strive to reach the goals we have set, particularly in these chaotic times. I look forward to working with UI Health Care leadership and all my colleagues in the department and outside to ensure its continued growth and development in the future.
