The article, entitled Reference Intervals for Clinical Chemistry Analytes for Transgender Men and Women on Stable Hormone Therapy, defines reference intervals (“normal ranges”) for frequently ordered laboratory tests including creatinine (kidney function), liver enzymes, and lipids in healthy transgender people.
The study was a collaborative effort between the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) Department of Pathology, the UIHC Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Questioning (LGBTQ) Clinics, University of Washington-Seattle, and an LGBTQ-focused clinic in Seattle. University of Iowa faculty involved in the study were Matthew Krasowski, MD, PhD, Katie Imborek, MD, and Nicole Nisly, MD. Robert Humble, MD, a current pathology resident at Iowa, assisted with the logistics of the subject recruitment and specimen collection as a medical student and was the lead author writing up the findings for publication. Other contributors from Iowa include Susan Dane, MT(ASCP), Jan Frerichs, MT(ASCP), and Nancy Dole, RN. The principal investigator in Seattle was Dina Greene, PhD, DABCC.
The American Association of Clinical Chemistry (AACC), the parent organization for The Journal of Laboratory Medicine, issued a press release on the study .
