Dr. Carol Holman has been appointed as the 3rd Charles E. Platz Professor of Pathology Education. Charles E. Platz, M.D. was a faculty member in the Department of Pathology at the University of Iowa for more than a quarter of a century. During these years, Charlie always made patient welfare paramount in his remarkable work with trainees, pathologists, surgeons, and oncologists. Friends and family of Dr. Platz, as well as the Department of Pathology, contributed funds to establish the Charles E. Platz Professor of Pathology Education as a way to recognize Charlie’s contributions to the advancement of pathology through his teaching and research. Prior recipients of the Platz Professorship were Fred Dee, MD (2005-2010) and Leslie Bruch, MD (2010-2022).
Dr. Holman received her PhD in Biochemistry from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1997 and her MD from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1999. She did AP/CP pathology residency training at University of Minnesota from 1999-2003 followed by Hematopathology fellowship at University of Minnesota from 2003-2005. Dr. Holman was an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota from 2005-2011. She joined the University of Iowa pathology faculty as Clinical Associate Professor in 2011 and then was promoted to Clinical Professor in 2018.
Dr. Holman has been very active in clinical service, teaching, and scholarly activity. She has served as the director of the Hematopathology Laboratory since 2016 and as the Director of Leukemia Pathology for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center since 2012. She has been the Director of the Hematopathology fellowship and also the Director of the Hematopathology resident rotation since 2016. She has been awarded the University of Iowa Department of Pathology Resident Teaching Award (voted on by the pathology residents) and received the Medical Education Award in recognition of contributions to medical education at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She has also been active with scholarly publications and conference presentations, including projects involving pathology residents and fellows.
We are delighted that Dr. Holman will be the 3rd recipient of the Charles E. Platz Professor of Pathology Education. She truly embodies the commitment to patient care, education, and scholarship exemplified by Dr. Platz.
