Dr. John Harty Receives Five-Year R01 Research Grant from the National Institutes of Health Investigating Why Malaria Vaccines are Less Effective in Malaria Endemic Regions

Dr. John HartyDr. Harty received a new five-year grant from the NIH entitled “Mechanisms of compromised CD8 T cell responses to vaccination in malaria experienced hosts.”  The award totals $3,442,760, the project started June 24, 2024 and concludes April 30, 2029.

Malaria remains a global scourge of with almost 50% of humans living in endemic areas.

Several promising vaccine candidates work well in malaria naïve volunteers, but show diminished potency when evaluated in the malaria experienced populations.  This application seeks to determine what features of malaria cause diminished vaccine responses and how these responses can be improved to enhance vaccine potency.
